Les questions liées aux profonds bouleversements technologiques en cours de par la relation déconcertante entre la cognition, la machine, l’humanité et les sensations, fascinent Julie Favreau et alimentent sa pratique. Mais c’est l’exercice d’imaginer les formes physiques possibles « d’entités » qui se sont mélangées entre nos corps, la nature et la technologie qui est le sujet pivot de son exposition Intuitions, récemment présentée au Musée d’Art de Joliette (Joliette, Canada). La micro-conférence sera l’occasion d’être guidée par l’artiste dans son exposition. Elle présentera des œuvres récentes qui mettent en scène, grâce à une entité IA et à l’expérience de la caméra, une proposition pour envisager la transition technologique et un futur rhizomatique.
Questions linked to the profound technological upheavals underway, and the unsettling relationship between cognition, machine, humanity and sensation, fascinate Julie Favreau and fuel her practice. But it is the exercise of imagining the possible physical forms of « entities » that have mixed between our bodies, nature and technology that is the pivotal subject of her exhibition « Intuitions », recently presented at the Musée d’Art de Joliette (Joliette, Canada). The micro-conference will be an opportunity to be guided by the artist through her exhibition. She will present recent works that, thanks to an AI entity and the experience of the camera, put forward a proposition to consider technological transition and a rhizomatic future.
Julie Favreau
Julie Favreau (elle) est une artiste québécoise qui vit et travaille entre Montréal et Berlin. À travers ses films, sculptures et photographies, elle crée des scénarios futuristes, dans lesquels les protagonistes participent à des rituels partagés. Ses derniers projets sont des témoins des multiples interrogations éthiques concernant les bouleversements technologiques actuels. Les questions y sont posées par le biais d’une approche sensorielle/«embodied» et spirituelle. Nous y faisons la connaissance de personnes qui interagissent avec une entité en émergence que Favreau conçoit comme un Hyperobjet (Timothy Morton). Il s’agit d’une incarnation physique en constante évolution de ce qui est omniprésent, réel pour tous : une intelligence artificielle, un virus, un corps sans organes. Julie Favreau s’est installée à Berlin à l’occasion d’un concours national, lui octroyant une résidence d’un an à la Künstlerhaus Bethanien (2017). Elle a été retenue pour le Prix artistique Sobey en 2018 et en 2012 ; et est lauréate du Prix Pierre-Ayot 2014 et de la Bourse Claudine et Stephen Bronfman (2012). Son travail a entre autres fait l’objet de critiques dans The Guardian, Magenta, Hyperallergic, Canadian Art, Taz, Berliner Zeitung, Momus. Favreau a obtenu un baccalauréat en beaux-arts axé sur la création d’images en mouvement, la performance vidéo et le cinéma de la Nouvelle Vague (UQAM-2001-2005). Elle s’est ensuite formée à la chorégraphie de façon autodidacte au Canada et en France, en participant à de nombreux ateliers dans des institutions de premier plan, et en s’engageant activement dans le milieu de la performance chorégraphiée et de la danse. Favreau est titulaire d’une maîtrise en sculpture (Concordia-2012). Son film « This Thing » a été créé et produit sous le commissariat d’Aseman Sabet, avec A.I.Ship (Harvard & Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology and Bioethics) ainsi que ETH Zürich-Bioethics – Health Ethics and Policy Lab.
Julie Favreau (she/her) is a Quebec artist who lives and works between Montreal and Berlin. Through her films, sculptures and photographs, she creates futuristic scenarios in which the protagonists participate in shared rituals. Her latest projects bear witness to the many ethical questions raised by today’s technological upheavals. These questions are posed through a sensory/embodied and spiritual approach. We meet people who interact with an emerging entity that Favreau conceives of as a Hyperobject (Timothy Morton). This is an ever-evolving physical embodiment of what is ubiquitous, real to everyone: an artificial intelligence, a virus, a body without organs.

Julie Favreau moved to Berlin in response to a national competition, which awarded her a one-year residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien (2017). She was shortlisted for the Sobey Art Prize in 2018 and in 2012; and is the winner of the Prix Pierre-Ayot 2014 and the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship (2012).
Her work has been reviewed in The Guardian, Magenta, Hyperallergic, Canadian Art, Taz, Berliner Zeitung and Momus, among others. Favreau earned a BFA in moving image creation, video performance and New Wave cinema (UQAM-2001-2005). She then trained as a self-taught choreographer in Canada and France, taking part in numerous workshops at leading institutions, and becoming actively involved in the choreographed performance and dance scene. Favreau holds a master’s degree in sculpture (Concordia-2012). Her film « This Thing » was created and produced under the curatorship of Aseman Sabet, with A.I.Ship (Harvard & Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology and Bioethics) and ETH Zürich-Bioethics – Health Ethics and Policy Lab.
